The estate old vines are dry-farmed and head trained, yielding intense fruit flavors, balanced acidity, and structured tannins. Soils here are well-drained, gravelly clay and loam which help to impart layered notes of raspberry, strawberry, and cherry. Like stepping back in time, elegant, old fashioned Zin flavors reflect the rich history of land that has been cultivated for winemaking for almost a century.
2017 was exceptionally low yielding. The growing season started off well with full reservoirs and replenished soils. The cons: inconsistent weather patterns and extreme heat spikes resulting in reduced fruit set. The pros: temperate summer days right before harvest and cool nights fostered good flavor development while keeping sugars down and acids intact. Both challenging and rewarding, the end result was a small crop of excellent quality.
PRODUCTION NOTES: Meticulously hand sorted at the crusher. Fermented in small open-top tanks. Aged exclusively in French oak for 18 months.
BEST ENJOYED: Decant and drink now or age for 10+ years.
NOSE: Loaded with sweet blueberry aromatics, nutmeg and vanilla bean. Cranberry and toasty notes sprinkled into a ZinFUNdel nose.
TASTE: Smooth, creamy, and filled with Zinberry notes of raspberry, blackberry, strawberry, and cherry. Classic Dry Creek bramble, French oak vanilla aka 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde.
MOUTHFEEL: Structured minerality paired with sweet, supple tannins. Lush, vibrant, bone dry, and moderate in alcohol.
FINISH: Smooth and quenching. A true taste of place lingers.
VARIETAL: 100% old vine, dry-farmed Zinfandel from our 92-year-old estate block.
